News Headlines 2004
27th Dec Well done to those who were brave enough to venture out over the Christmas period. Louise Raines finished 1st F35, 3rd Female overall, in yesterday's Boxing Day 8k (shortened from 10k due to the icy conditions) in a superb time of 33.33. Other Tri Preston results, Andy Crawshaw 30.34 and Peter Knott 44.19. In this morning's Ribble Valley 10k we had 5 finishers in Andy Brooks 38.47, Martin Kerry 40.35, Phil Davidson 43.26, Charlotte Tompkins 45.06 and Jason Robinson 45.36. Happy New Year.
19th Dec In today's Great Langdale Christmas Pudding 10k in Cumbria, contested in glorious sunshine and with snow on the fells, there was a 3 way tussle for Tri Preston bragging rights between Rodger Wilkins, Andy Brooks and Stephen Schofield. After a closely fought race which involved much shadow watching and order changing, age finally triumphed over beauty with Rodger taking the honours. Full Tri Preston results: Rodger Wilkins 35.50, Andy Brooks 36.37, Jason Robinson (the runner formerly known as Stephen Schofield) 37.25, Anna Willetts 44.09(PB), Phil Davidson 45.07, Tim Armit 45.09, Alyson Woodall 46.36, Dave Rigby 46.50, Simon Cole 48.52, Heather Wells 51.15 and Nicola Brookes 1-06.33. Closer to home, the Bolton family turned out in force for the Longridge 7 and Family Fun Run. In the 7 mile race dad Adam was 4th MV45 home, 22nd overall in a superb time of 45:21 (4 minutes faster than last year) and in the 2 mile Fun Run son Jacob was 15th overall in a time of 11:29 with sister Freya (23rd) and brother Isaac (24th) close behind, finishing together on 12:51.
5th Dec Andy Brooks, Andy Crawshaw, Anna Willetts and Chris Vaughan all achieved PBs in today's Guy's 10 mile road race with times of 59:37, 1:04:03, 1:13:56 and 1:17:14 respectively. Andy personally shaved more than 2 minutes off his time at the Derwentwater 10 last month to go under the hour in only his second ever 10 miler. Other results, John Hampson 1:03:39 and Mark Buckley, training for his first Ironman in Lanzarote in May, 1:14:54.
5th Dec Congratulations to John Hampson for completing the Karrimor International Mountain Marathon over the last weekend of October. John, partnered by Chris Molloy, gained a Silver Certificate in the Long Score event, finishing 123rd out of 225 starting pairs with a total time for the 2 days of 12:13:59. You'll need to quiz John for more details on the Long Score event but this report on the 'A' race from Northumberland Fell Runners will give you a good insight.
28th Nov Heather feels the pain. Stung into race action in Florida article from yesterday's Lancashire Evening Post. Tri Preston member Heather Wells (from Lytham) has just returned from competing in and completing the Florida Ironman Triathlon. This event is a continuous race and has a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and finally a full Marathon. In August this year she was featured in the LEP following her heroic effort at the 1/2 Ironman Triathlon in Dorset where she got stung on the face by a wasp and temporarily lost the use of one of her eyes. Remarkably, she got stung in the face again by a wasp, this time on her lips when she was eating an Energy Bar!!!
27th Nov The results from the Wesham 10k this morning are just in. First home for Tri Preston and 21st overall, Andy Brooks in a PB of 36:24. Other Tri Preston results, Mark Midgley 41:01, Marian Hesketh 42:03, Andrew Tabernacle 42:05, Stephen Hinde 42:22, Paul Ferguson 42:44, Phil Davidson 43:43, Karl Bolton 45:26, Dave Rigby 46:28, Simon Cole 46:47 (PB), Chris Vaughan 47:00, Heather Wells 50:08, Tim Armit 50:10, Dawn McCracken 57:15, Glenys Ferguson 57:35 and Dawn Walmsley 59:37.
24th Nov A big well done to everyone who entered the Darwen Biathlon on Sunday. It was really good to see us pick up so many prizes. The conditions were awful on the run but we still managed to put in some excellent times. A massive well done to the new members who all did really well despite the iced over run circuit. Also a big thank you to Andy for doing the event with a 13 year old Tristar to finish 4th overall. A great achievement for both Sam and Andy. On a lighter note they just got pipped by Anna and Rodger who had a fantastic race.. has Andy had any stick, I'm sure he has.
7th Nov Tri Preston has its first Iron Woman. Heather Wells finished Ironman Florida in the early hours of this morning UK time in an impressive 12:22:12, 27th of 72 in her age category. Heather's times for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and Marathon were 1:19:12, 6:13:19 and 4:35:33 respectively. Congratulations also to Tim Armit on finishing his first Ironman. Tim completed the race in a time of 12:53:52 with splits of 1:19:59, 6:19:51 and 4:56:10 to finish 287th of 382 in his age category.
5th Nov Follow Heather and Tim live at Ironman Live. Heather Wells and Tim Armit are competing at the Ironman Florida Triathlon set to take place tomorrow in Panama City Beach and surrounding Bay County. Over 2,100 athletes are registered to race in Florida in what could be the largest mass swim start in Ironman history. About 22 per cent of the field racing tomorrow are women. The largest age-category for the men is Tim's age category, 35-39, with 436 competitors, and for the women the largest category is 30-34, with 124. There are 83 in Heather's group. Follow on the web if you can - if all goes well they'll be running the last 18 miles or so in the dark, finishing sometime early Sunday morning our time!!
13th Oct Adam Bolton kept up his good form of late with a superb time of 30.10
in this morning's Green Drive 5 in Lytham. He was
followed home by fellow Tri Preston athletes Phil Davidson in 34.31, Paul Ferguson 35.21,
Darren Slater 35.41, Chris Vaughan 37.12 and Glenys Ferguson 47.19.
In the first round of the
Mid Lancs XC League held at Witton Park

2 places and 7 seconds separating them.
12th Oct TRI AND SHE MIGHT article from today's LEP highlighting Charlotte Tompkins' stunning first season in the sport.
10th Oct The Triathlon season may well be at a close but there is still plenty to go at including some local Duathlons before the end of the year. There's a choice of a 10k Road Race or the Clitheroe Duathlon (3m Run, 20.5m Bike, 3m Run) at Bashall Eaves today, the Kendal Duathlon (2.5m Run, 12m Bike, 2.5m Run) is on 31st Oct and the Darwen Masters Charity Biathlon (900 yards Swim, 5 mile Run) is on 21st Nov. It's also the start of the Cross Country season locally with the Mid Lancs, Red Rose and South East Lancs Cross Country Leagues all about to start. If that isn't enough there are plenty of local running events to choose from including the Green Drive 5, Through the Villages Race (8 miles 781 yards!), Preston 10, Wesham 10k, Guys 10 and Longridge 7 before the turn of the year. Next Sunday's Green Drive 5 in Lytham can be entered on the day. However the popular Wesham 10k (over-subscribed for the past 5 years) on Sat 27th Nov is filling up fast. You can make sure of your entry by entering online at Runner's World.
3rd Oct The Tri Preston relay team of Andy Brooks, Paul Sanderson, Stephen Schofield and Rodger Wilkins finished a magnificent second today, narrowly missing out on winning the Cleveland Team Relays. Only 9 seconds separated them from 2003 National Champions Hartlepool Tri over a course that consisted of a 4 X 400m Relay Swim (Swam together), a 23 mile Team Pursuit Cycle (Last team member over the line = Team time) and 4 X 3 miles of Running. In the Sport 2000 Super-Sprint Triathlon at Ribby Hall, Tri Preston's Louise Raines was first Female home in an event that was won by Tri Preston Duathlon winner Michael Pluckrose (Anderson Racing). Elsewhere, Darren Slater and Mark Buckley both registered good times in Larry's Southport 5 miler and the Garstang Half Marathon respectively.

26th Sept Nicola King and Adam Bolton both performed well at the European Duathlon Championships in Swansea this morning. Nicola finished 6th of 13 in her age group (30-34) with 1st Run(10k), T1, Cycle(40k), T2 and 2nd Run(5k) splits of 00:45:05, 00:00:51, 01:10:25, 00:00:49 and 00:23:08 for a Total of 02:20:21. Adam finished 9th of 19 in his age group (45-49) with splits of 00:41:12, 00:00:34, 01:06:48, 00:00:36 and 00:22:29 for a Total of 02:11:42. Peter Knott, unfortunately, suffered a hard fall during the initial 10k run and had to be assisted off the course covered in blood.

9th Sept Charlotte Tompkins finished 4th in the Youth A race at the World Biathle Championships in Marktoberdorf, Bavaria on 4th September with brother Josh taking home a Bronze medal in the Junior Men's race. Charlotte felt she was let down by her swim but she shouldn't be disappointed after a hugely successful first Triathlon season which has seen her take 1st place in every Triathlon she has entered, namely Windsor Sprint, Cheshire, Nantwich and Boundary Breeze. Pictures, Report and Results from the World Biathle Championships.
8th Sept Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Thursday evening open water swim session will be suspended on Thursday 9th September, until further notice. Further information can be sought from the Watersports Centre by emailing watersports.centre@salford.gov.uk.

The Gatorade Half Ironman UK Triathlon will be shown on Channel 4 on 14th November 2004 at 7.30am (UK time).
6th Sept Current trend of bike thefts in Lancashire. Bad news. A Colnago was stolen from outside The Priory Scorton. This was a planned theft by somebody wearing cycling type clothing who was dropped off and subsequently just got on the bike and rode off. These people had been seen around the cafe previously. Today, two members of Cleveleys RC, Lawrence Crookall and Peter Lea, had their Trek carbon fibre bikes stolen from outside a cafe at Sabden where a Merlin Titanium was deliberately left. The two Treks were locked together with the Merlin locked to all three. The locks have been easily cut and the Merlin moved and placed to one side. More info will be on the CTT message board later from Peter who usually goes under the name of "Stealthpete". Both bikes can be identified by the owners, one Trek is in blue US Postal and the other slightly newer in all black. Both have Ksyrium wheels and the black Trek has a Cinelli Ram carbon seatpost. See the CTT site for further info and keep an eye out for them should they appear for sale elsewhere.
6th Sept An Evening with Graeme Obree, Saturday 9th October, 8 pm, Sands Centre, Carlisle.
31st Aug The Ladies Race Series title would appear to be heading Lisa Riddall's way again following a 10 point haul at the Horwich Triathlon. Lisa finished 3rd female, 2nd in her age group, in one of the hardest races around. The bike is hilly, and the run is hillier still! To top things off the weather was pretty nasty as well. Ian Murphy, having punctured in both his previous races, had less luck, getting stopped for 3 mins by a herd of cows, and again at the traffic lights in Horwich centre. The run was hard, and had been lengthened slightly from last year. It is advertised as a 10k run, but is well over 12k. Anyhow, they both finished, don't ache as much as expected, and look forward to doing it all again next year. A few more should have a go at this challenging event next time around!!
28th Aug A hornet sting in eye fails to stop Heather article from today's Evening Post. Heather Wells completed HIMUK courageously as she lost the use of an eye after a bee got caught in her glasses and stung her after 30 miles of the bike. Also, Hawaii hope for Anna after top two finish article from Thursday's Citizen.

The Women's Triathlon is on Wednesday 25th August, start time 08:00 with the Men's the day after, same start time.
9th Aug Four Tri Preston members completed the 21st Lowther Run, a Half Marathon, on Friday. It's probably one of the more beautiful on and off road long runs there is, running out from Lowther Fair up over the tops looking down on Ullswater and back around, it's stunning. This was the 4th or 5th time Heather and Tim have done it but the first for some, only 57 in it this year and as usual it was a race between Paul Muller and Alex Rowe for first. Times were Tim Armit 1hr 51min, Dave Rigby 1hr 56min, Heather Wells 2hr 00min, Simon Cole 2hr 01min. Well done also to John Hampson, 27th Male Vet, 59th (of 174) Overall in last Sunday's Hebburn Triathlon with a time of 1:03:17.
7th Aug Mixed Team of Stephen, Jill, Charlotte and Andy win Bronze at National Relays. Womens Team of Barbara, Shirley, Helen and Lisa finish 18th despite a 2 minute penalty for Drafting!

24th July Highlights of the Salford Triathlon are on BBC1 North West on Saturday 31st July between 12:45 and 13:50 (1 hour and 5 minutes long).
24th July Could it be the best ever turn out in Tri Preston colours tomorrow? Competing at Salford are Jane Patel in the Relay, Mark Slattery, Phil Davidson and Steven Worthington in the Sprint and Barbara, Helen, Jill, Lisa, Nicola, Pam, Andy Brooks, Andrew McCracken, Darren, Dave, Ian, Mark Buckley, Mark Curley, Stephen Schofield and Tim in the Full distance. That's 19 in total entered to race. Spare a thought also for our Chairman, Paul Sanderson who is in Zurich competing in Ironman Switzerland, start 07.00 Sunday. Whilst on the subject of Ironman you may remember Richard Mason, patched up with several metal plates, eye socket rebuilt etc following an accident during the training weekend in May. Well, he completed Ironman Germany on July 10th in a time of 11:26.56.
23rd July Greek Olympics (2,693 kb Movie file). This is a classic. Needs some sound - and no, it's not rude!!!
23rd July Saddle saws. Guardian Review of A Significant Other, an inside account of the Centenary Tour de France. In 2003 Lance Armstrong won the Centenary Tour de France. It was his fifth victory and has cemented his position as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. This is the story of the 2003 Tour through the eyes of Lance's right-hand rider, the Colombian Victor Hugo Pena (who himself became the first Colombian to wear the yellow jersey during the race). Behind every great cyclist is a close-knit team of 'domestiques', world class cyclists who eschew individual glory to ensure their star rider wins. Pena was handpicked by Armstrong and is uniquely placed to provide an insight into what it takes to stay at the top of this most gruelling of sports. By deconstructing the myth of the Tour de France, and revealing the true role of the domestique for the first time, A Significant Other will be a classic sports book.
21st July Sunday's meeting has been postponed to the following Sunday (August 1st) due to the large participation at Salford both racing and spectating. Understandably a lot of members have requested the above so that they can spend the rest of the day recovering or with their families.
14th July Open Water Swim Monday 19th July. The swim session for this Monday is on. Same format as previous. The results for the latest water test are back and show that the water quality is good and therefore satisfactory for swimming.
6th July Looking for accomodation for Salford? Book a room at the Travel Inn, Salford Quays, 10 minutes from the Lowry Centre and right next to the Quay House Beefeater. Register first however, as their system will not allow any online changes to a booking prior to registration. The system won't allow you to book a room for a single night either so the trick is to book a room for both the Saturday and Sunday nights and then delete the second night from your booking. The receptionist can do this for you but it will save you a phone call if you register first. £45.95 for a room for the night and you've got the added bonus of the BTA National Aquathlon Championships in the basin next door on the Saturday evening.
6th July There have been some changes made to the information regarding the Salford ITU World Cup Triathlon on the event website - please go to http://www.trisalford.info/age_groups.asp and make sure you are aware of the latest information. In particular there have been some Wave start time changes.
5th July The latest race news from the Salford Triathlon, including information about registration, bike racking, transition rules, Age Group Wave starts etc, is now online. List of entrants (122 kb Excel file) to date.
4th July Quarter page article from last nights Lancashire Evening Post entitled 'Top class display sees Adam earn GB call-up'.

2nd July The open water swim session for this Monday is on, usual script 7pm at Carnforth. If you require more information give Andrew McCracken a call. We may need some volunteers in the canoes, please let him know if you are willing.
1st July Read Colin's report from the recent World Duathlon Championships held in Geel, Belgium.
30th June Ilkley has been removed from the Tri Preston Race Series as it is fully subscribed including the standby list and there appear to be no Tri Preston entries to date. Great Liverpool (5th Sept) is a possible alternative. Please let Lisa know your thoughts.
29th June Video clip of the First Wave start at the Chester Deva Triathlon. The file is 14,414 KB in size so be warned, it will take a while to download. More video clips of the First Wave here (10,207 KB) and here (5,760 KB).
28th June Congratulations to Neil Dunn who recently joined the club. Neil is no longer a Triathlon virgin after claiming a sixth place at the Sefton Triathlon (100m/4000m/2000m) on Saturday.
28th June 2 Brick sessions on Saturday from Worden Park. Brick session 1 will be for members who wish to train for Olympic distance and will commence at 9.15. This will consist of a 8 mile bike followed by a 2 mile run, repeated 3 times, in pairs or individually. Brick session 2 will be for members who wish to train for Sprint distance and will commence at 9.45. This will be the usual format, 4.5 mile bike followed by a 1 mile run, repeated 3 times. This is open to all abilities, new members too. Do as much or as little as you feel like. As usual could you please let Ian Murphy know if you are coming and which session you will be doing.
28th June Both Heather Wells and Steven Worthington returned to Lancashire with BTA NW Region Age Group titles following this weekends Chester Deva Triathlon. Andy Brooks was 2nd in his Age Group and 15th Overall, Andrew McCracken registered a sub 2:30 in his first Olympic distance, there were PB's all round for Karl Bolton, Simon Cole, Tim Armit and Dave Rigby and this time it was Chris Vaughan's turn to be stopped by Cows on the Bike. What is it with Tri Preston and livestock? In the Deva Divas Women Only Sprint, Jill Beswick finished 1st Vet, 3rd Overall (just as she had the week before at Cheshire) and Barbara Dix was 1st in her Age Group, 10th Overall. It's a measure of her determination that Jill was a little disappointed with her result.
27th June Charlotte Tompkins was 1st in her Age Category in the latest round of the Biathle World Tour held in Weymouth yesterday. Despite the day before and the day after being exceptionally warm and sunny for Britain, the day of the event was subjected to gale force winds and a rolling sea. Charlotte completed the 1500m Run, 200m Swim, 1500m Run in 15 mins 32.7 secs. Next up for Charlotte is the British Biathle Championships and World Championships Qualifier at Millfield School, Street on 17th July. Read the Stormy Report.
24th June Adam Bolton has just found out that he's qualified for the European Duathlon Championships in Swansea in September. Qualifiers were last Saturday in Edinburgh, where it was freezing cold and rainy, but he was second fastest qualifier. He'd been to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers in Manchester the night before and drove up to Edinburgh with 3½ hours sleep - not recommended. Watch the Slideshow.
22nd June Next up are Chester's Deva and Deva Divas Triathlons on Sunday. Barbara, Bernie, Jill, Lisa, Shirley and Tricia are all entered in the Women Only Sprint and in the Olympic distance event we have a strong entry in Heather Wells, Andy Brooks, Andrew McCracken, Chris Vaughan, Dave Rigby, Karl Bolton, Mark Curley, Simon Cole, Steven Worthington and Tim Armit. First Wave is 8:00 for the Deva and 10:30 for the Deva Divas.
21st June The full results are yet to be posted on the Internet but at yesterdays Cheshire Triathlon, which was held in some truly awful weather, Tri Preston had the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 10th placed finishers in the Womens Sprint in Charlotte, Jill, Barbara and Bernie respectively. In the Mens race Josh finished 1st and Andy 4th. During the bike leg Josh and Andy were both stopped by a herd of cows crossing the road but fortunately there was a draft buster present so 4 minutes were deducted from Josh's finish time and 1 from Andy's. Well done also to Slatz, who, in only his second Sprint distance event, produced a new PB of 1:34:17.
17th June The Open Water Swim scheduled for Monday is on, the format is as previous, swim starts at 7:00 pm. Wet suits required, please park on the top Car Park and ensure you fill in a contact/waver form prior to the swim.

24th May Danny Banks from Tri Preston completed Ironman Lanzarote, the toughest Ironman race in the world, on Saturday (22 May). 19th May For those that missed it our own Jill Beswick was on the radio for a full hour last night between 7 and 8 pm. Jill was talking about her experience in the Madeira World Championships where she finished a magnificent 22nd place (of 57) in her Age Group. She was interviewed for a full hour by Radio Lancashire's Gary Flintoff who had cheered himself hoarse the previous night at Sunderlands play-off semi-final versus Crystal Palace. We have a full recording of the interview on tape for anyone wishing to listen to it. For those that did listen in you'll already know that she did herself and the club proud. Thanks for the text messages from Barbara, Alan, Andy and Chris even if the one from the boys was with only a minute to spare.
1st May Louise is so proud to be taking on world's best article from today's LEP.

27th Jan It's official, there is a meeting this Sunday (1st Feb) at South Ribble Tennis Centre (behind Sainburys Bamber Bridge) at 6 pm. Expect the meeting to last more than the usual hour and don't forget to bring along your membership fees, £15 for Seniors, £5 for Juniors (17 to 19 years). Membership is free for Youths and Tristars. Cash or Cheques (payable to Tri Preston) please. There will also be a meeting, same time and place, on Sunday 28th February. This will certainly last more than an hour as it is also the club A.G.M. Lets have a good turnout. I'm sure you'll all want to welcome back our new ITU World Aquathlon Champion in the 65-69 Age Group, Peter Knott.
