News Headlines 2008

Chrissie Wellington for BBC Sports Personality of the Year ...

And the winner is...
Perhaps they're saving the votes for 3 years time when Chrissie becomes the first lady to win 5 back to back Kona's. Anyway, here's Chrissie finishing and the last word on that flat.

1st/2nd Nov MP completes Dirty Double

Mark Procter completed the Ullswater Trails "Dirty Double" of the 15k Helvellyn Trail and the 12k "Steamy Surprise" Ullswater Trail over the weekend of November 1st and 2nd.
Closer to home and Sunday 2nd November saw the 25th anniversary of the eight miles and 781 yards Through the Villages Race sponsored by Sweatshop.
Starting and finishing at The Dressers’ Arms at Wheelton the course takes in the scenic delights of Brinscall, Abbey Village and Withnell before descending sharply to the finish.
The toughness of the course initially prompted the Village Hall Committee to provide free food at the end in the form of hotpot but this delight has now become an established part of the folklore for the event.
First of the 304 finishers was Bolton United Harrier Anthony Valentine in a time of 45:55. Tri Preston had 4 competitors in the top half, led home by Duncan Anderson in 53:20 (27th), Steve Bamber 55:12 (45th), Andy Crawshaw 56:51 (58th) and Phil Davidson 1:04:23 (145th). It is a sobering thought that the race record set by Rick Archer in 1990 is a full three minutes faster at 42:47 on a circuit which has remained completely unchanged.

28th Oct Coach Of The Year

Club coach Ian Murphy has won the Triathlon England NW Region Coach of the Year award. Ian's name and a written resume about his work as coach is now put before a panel of judges along with the other regional coaching winners and an overall BTF Coach of the Year is named at the British Triathlon Annual Awards Dinner on Saturday 15th November.
Ian has double cause for celebration as Nicola King has pre-qualified for both the 2009 World Age Group Triathlon Championships and European Triathlon Championships by finishing top of the 2008 Mazda National Triathlon Ranking Series. Nicola will be presented with both her Overall and Age Group prizes at the end of season awards dinner.

5th Oct Second Lady

Jill Mcgee (1:36:29) finished 2nd Lady, 1st Female Vet, at the Carsington Short Course Duathlon today.
Set in the Derbyshire Peak District, the event starts with a an undulating out and back 5k run on bridle paths alongside the reservoir, followed by an undulating 30k bike loop through the National Park that takes athletes up the infamous Middleton Top climb. The final 5k run is a repeat of the first run.

28th Sept Spotlight on Andrew Tuton

A few weeks after completing his first Olympic distance (3:05:10) at the Northampton Triathlon, Andrew Tuton today completed his second Sprint distance (1:20:21) at the Roade Triathlon. Clare Kane (2:16:18) had to settle for 4th Female and 1st in her age group at Northampton despite improving on her winning time from last year (2:18:04) by 1 minute 46 seconds.
At the Run Preston 5k and 10k road races, part of the On The Move Festival, Tri Preston was well represented by Robin Bush (21:43) in the 5k and Duncan Anderson (38:18), Adam Bolton (39:22), Andrew Crawshaw (39:39), Simon Hocking (41:11), Darren Slater (47:04), Andrea Caunce (48:27) and Nicola Tapley(49:24) in the 10k.

25th Sept Chrissie Wellington QandA

With Chrissie Wellington looking to defend her Ironman World Championship title in Hawaii on October 11th, she kindly agreed to answer the questions of TriTalk members. Chrissie states very clearly that she has never, nor will ever, take performance enhancing drugs. If you wanted to check that all those Torq bars and drinks you consume are legal, as Steve Turner did, then check out The 2008 Prohibited List.

21st Sept Helen claims classic win

Helen Murphy (1:10:24) finished a superb 3rd Overall and first in her age group in today's NW Classic Triathlon in Nantwich, beating husband and coach Ian into the bargain. Cheryl Hinde continues to improve under Ian's guidance, recording a 1:23:41 for 59th position out of a total 223 Female finishers. In the mens sprint, Matt Gallagher (1:20:01) recorded a PB by some 4 minutes with Ian just over a minute behind Helen in a time of 1:11:39.
In the Garstang Half Marathon, won by Gethin Butler, Andrew Crawshaw placed an impressive 28th of 191 finishers in a time of 1:29:48, and at the Brinscall Triathlon it was very much a case of the Brinscall Blues for Tri Preston with Martyn Cooper disqualified, Zoe Sharp failing to finish due to sickness and Peter Sydenham struggling through injury. Adam Livermore (1:10:06) did however secure an excellent 10th spot just ahead of cycling great Bill Nickson.

13th Sept Tri Preston Four in Great Swim

Nicola King (25:42), Adam Bolton (27:47), Darren Slater (32:35) and Zoe Sharp (35:52) completed the inaugural Great North Swim, the latest event to be launched as part of Take To The Streets, a national activity programme designed to fight spiralling inactivity and obesity rates and raise huge amounts of money for charity in the process. Team GB's David Davies (17:03) splashed to victory ahead of Olympic rivals, Holland's Maarten van der Weijden (17:05) and Germany's Thomas Lurz (17:19). In the women's race, Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten once again claimed success, Patten (18:21) finishing at the top of the podium, closely followed by teammate Keri-Anne (18:22) in a sensational photo finish. Following in their wake on England's largest natural lake, over 2,000 swimmers took to the challenge of the one mile open water course against the stunning backdrop of the Lake District National Park.

7th Sept Double Ironman

Having already completed Skipton Triathlon, Chirk Sprint Triathlon, Kendal Sprint Tri, Keswick Mountain Festival Triathlon, Rother Valley Triathlon Festival, Bala Middle Distance Triathlon, The Cleveland Steelman Triathlon, Ripon Triathlon, National Club Relays and The Big Woody (13:14:33) in his first full season, Chris Hughes finished his 2nd Ironman in 3 weeks with a 12:41:18 at Ironman UK. That amounts to 4 Sprints, 3 Olympic, 2 Middle and 2 Ironman in his debut season, not bad for starters. Chris also completed the Cheshire Cat cyclosportive at the start of the season as well as achieving iconic status on the Pirates Forum for his exploits at Bala Middle, a report of which can be found in the July 2008 Newsletter.

7th Sept Helvellyn Triathlon

Rodger Wilkins, Andrew Knowles, Martyn Cooper, Andrew Crawshaw, Mark Procter and John Hampson all did superbly to complete the infamous Helvellyn Triathlon, which took place despite atrocious weather in the Lake District in recent weeks. Steve Schofield was also spotted in his Tri Preston kit on his comeback from fathering duties. Both the swim and run had to be cut short with the water temperature registering a chilly 12 degrees, perfect for that ice cream head feeling.

3rd Sept Knott Alone

Peter Knott was the sole Tri Preston competitor in Race 4, the last of the Epic Events Summer Aquathlons from the Rock & River Outdoor Centre in Mawdesley.

August roundup

Tri Preston took the team honours at the Glossop Triathlon with Rodger Wilkins (1.19.17) chalking up yet another good result, finishing second overall for the 400m swim, 23k bike and 7.1k run. Other Tri Preston finishers were Dave Tierney (1:30:30), Neil Smith (1:36:42) and Peter Knott (2:08:39).
Phil Davidson (35:03) was 1st Vet, 7th Overall, at Splash and Dash 3. The 3rd of the Summer Aquathlons from the Rock and River Outdoor Centre in Mawdesley saw a strong Tri Preston/CSC presence with Neil Smith 10th Overall in 36:34, Andrew Lennard 11th in 36:45 and Rob Fido 13th in 37:23. Last race in the series is Wednesday 3rd September.
The National Club Relays in Nottingham saw intense but friendly rivalry between three Tri Preston teams of four. With each member completing a 500m swim, 15k bike and 5k run, the Crack Squad of Jim Townhill, Zoe Sharp, Helen Murphy and Chris Hughes claimed club bragging rights with a time of 3:57:19, closely followed by the Annihilator Rebel Dippers (aka A.R.D.) team of Phil Davidson, Andrea Caunce, Neil Smith and Rob Fido in 4:01:04 and the Sisters Of Murphy team of Andrew Chatburn, Colin Hughes, Sharon Townhill and Ian Murphy in 4:03:02.
John Hampson (5:28:26) and Mark Procter (5:31:46) survived the Wensleydale Triathlon, ranked one of the 10 toughest in the UK. It must have been decidedly wet and grim as Richard Holmes and Duncan Anderson (bike problems) both failed to finish; John's report can be viewed here.
Chris Hughes warmed up for Ironman UK with a 13:14:33 finish at The Big Woody Ironman-distance race in the Forest of Dean.
Club President and last year's Tri Preston Race Series winner Paul Sanderson finished a class 6th Overall and 1st in his age group at the Macclesfield Triathlon (400m, 24.6k, 7.18k). Paul's time of 1:19:04 included the 2nd fastest swim time of the day. Aly Woodall finished an impressive 3rd in her age category and 7th Female in a time of 1:36:06 whilst Dave Tierney (1:25:39) continued a formidable first full season for 14th place overall.
Despite inclement weather on Bank Holiday Monday, the Cockerham CancerCare Triathon attracted a record entry of 150 competitors with participants from as far afield as Salisbury, Bristol, Northampton and Whitley Bay. Chris Wild (1:12:06) and Miles Peacock (1:36:16) competed for Tri Preston in a race won by former Tri Preston triathlete Steve Worthington in 1:00:30. Held for the first time in conjunction with local charity CancerCare, competitors completed a chilly 350m open water swim, a slippery 15k cross-country bike and 5k run through the picturesque coastal and rural scenery in and around Cockerham village. The race finished at the Parish Hall where competitors enjoyed a pint and a burger whilst waiting for the presentation ceremony. Adrian Dalgliesh rode the bike leg for winning team Townley and Co; here is his report and this 2007 report by Richard Hyder further underlines the novelty factor.
Nicola King was first lady home at the Blithfield Triathlon, shortened to an Aquathlon due to fog. Nicola completed the 'standard distance' race in 1:01:35.

14th August Eatwell and the Phelps diet

Aly Woodhall very kindly gave a presentation on Diet and Nutrition at the June club meeting. The Eatwell Plate makes healthy eating easier to understand by showing the types and proportions of foods we need to have a healthy and well balanced diet.
US swimmer Michael Phelps made history yesterday when he scooped a record-breaking 11th Olympic gold medal. The Michael Phelps diet reveals all.

29th July Murphy Gets Ahead

Paul Sanderson's pole position lasted a full 12 days as coach Ian Murphy secured a 23:22 in the penultimate round of the Brock TT to finish top of the Tri Preston TT standings for 2008.

27th July P.S. TP TT Champion 2008?

With a month to go its hotting up at the top of the leader board to be the Tri Preston Time Trial champion for 2008. Club president Paul Sanderson is currently in pole position having registered a 23.36 on the Tarleton course 17th July. Don't count out Richard Holmes and Ian Murphy just yet though; in joint 2nd and only a second behind, expect a showdown in the next couple of weeks.

20th July Five in a Kayak and roses all round

Jon Field today completed the BLDSA Coniston 5.25 miles Senior swim, ably supported by Jim Townhill in a kayak. Jon finished 22nd Male in a time of 4.05.26 in a race that saw 6 retirements. I understand Jim's (Kayaking) services are definitely NOT required in the future!
Phil Davidson and Steven Turner completed the Roses Round sportive, a challenging 74 mile ride incorporating the beauty of Lancashire and Yorkshire combined.

20th July The 4 Divas

Cheryl Hinde, Zoe Sharp, Sarah Patterson and Kerry Stevens all took part in the Royles Deva Divas Triathlon today. The Chester Deva Divas Triathlon is a short distance ladies only race over the distances of 750m swim, 16k bike and 5k run. 2008 was the fifth year for the Divas' race with the conditions significantly more challenging this year due to a choppy lake and strong winds on the bike and run.

18th July Seeing red

Referees award more points when they see red In 2005, evolutionary biologists Russell Hill and Robert Barton at the University of Durham, UK showed that wearing red clothing positively impacted an athlete's performance. They suggested that this was due to an association between red and dominance and/or aggression.

13th July Louise reigns in Switzerland

Louise Raines added Ironman to her already impressive résumé with a 12:35:47.8 finish at Ironman Switzerland on Sunday. She recorded times of 1:14:37, 6:22:14 and 4:48:47 for the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run to finish 149th of 309 starters in her age group.
Louise missed out by a casting vote on winning the third series of the BBC's "SAS: Are you tough enough?" contested in the Namibian desert and was also runner-up in ITV's "Gladiators" in 1998.

13th July Colin breezes to age group win

In January 2006 the club took a call from Colin Hughes' wife to inform us that Colin had suffered one of his yearly bone breaking sessions and was in traction at Royal Preston Hospital awaiting an operation to pin his femur back together.
30 months later and Colin picked up where he left off in 2005 (and 2003) by claiming yet another Age Group title at the NW Sprint Distance Championships at Boundary Breeze. Quite remarkable.
Rodger Wilkins finished 4th Overall in a week where he claimed his 3rd win in 3 at the Salford Aquathlons and Nicola King repeated her result from last year, 2nd Overall and 1st in her age group. 2nd places also for Tabs and Helen in their respective age groups.
Well Done to all in a weekend where nearly a third of the club were out racing in force at Ripon, Boundary Breeze and Ironman Switzerland.

10th July Race report: Ironman Germany

Joanna Carritt was worried that she might have slightly over cooked it for Ironman Germany and most would agree that 65 hours training, in eight days, at Epic Camp Italy, only two weeks before the big event, might have been a bit of Kamikaze training plan. Read her race report here.

9th July Salford Tri to return in 2009

After a year's sabbatical the Salford Triathlon World Cup will be back in 2009. Unfortunately the 2008 event had to be axed after it was decided that the race would have clashed with preparations for the Beijing Olympics in August.
The first triathlon to be run in Salford was in 2000. The following year was the British Championships - a race held as the test event for the Commonwealth Games the following year. Since the Games there have been five ITU World Cups in successive years, attracting some of the world's top triathletes to the city. In 2007, Salford BG Triathlon World Cup staged its biggest and most successful event yet, with over 15,000 spectators witnessing 420 age group competitors and 135 elite athletes from 33 countries take part in the event.
It's expected that the 2009 Salford Triathlon World Cup will take place on the 26th July, although this date is provisional and still needs to be officially confirmed. For more information click here.

6th July National Age Group Championships, Wakefield Triathlon

The weather wasn't kind to the 400 or so triathletes competiting in the third successive British Championships staged at Pugneys Country Park in Wakefield on Sunday. However, the conditions on a tough and technical course didn't stop some excellent performances from Tri Preston's Nicola King 2:27:48 (3rd in age grp/12th Female), Martyn Cooper 2:28:41 (18th in age grp/122nd Male), Jill McGee 2:38:19 (3rd in age grp/27th Female) and Adam Livermore 2:40:36 (37th in age grp/186th Male).
The BBC filmed the event to be shown regionally in September on the 'Inside Out' program.

5th/6th July Steelman/Ironman

Some sensational results from Tri Preston athletes over the weekend.
If you missed the link (see TP splits below) from the Home Page you won't have realised how close Vicki was to the cut off time at Ironman Germany. She trained all year to a get-me-round policy but boy did she push it close; 13 minutes and 22 seconds to be exact.
Further up the field Duncan and Richard turned in awesome performances in their first Ironman and Jim and Shirley will also return with PB's. Follow the link from the TP Results page for a full list of results.
Closer to home Chris Hughes put his Bala Middle Distance disaster to bed with a 5:01:14 Half Ironman at the Clevelend Steelman. Chris' time included a 1:16:19 12 miler, the 8th fastest run time on the day.

6th July TP Splits

Tri Preston updates. Live race coverage here.

"Chrissie Wellington ist auf dem Weg die Weltbestzeit der achtfachen Hawaii-Siegerin Paula Newby-Fraser von 8:50:53 aus dem Jahr 1994 beim Ironman Europe zu unterbieten. Es wird eine sehr knappe Entscheidung und Wellington lächelt trotz aller Anstrengung auf den letzten 3 Kilometern. Selbs wenn sie es nicht schaffen sollte, hat sie alle Optionen in den nächsten Tagen"
which roughly translates to
"Tri Bear fan Chrissie Wellington is on the way to breaking the world record of 8:50:53 set by 8 times Hawaii winner Paula Newby Fraser in 1994 at Ironman Europe".

5th July A beautiful Saturday in Frankfurt

Relief for Dave, Duncan, Jim, Richard, Shirley and Vicki; the word is that wetsuits will be allowed for the swim tomorrow. Right now the temperature in Frankfurt is 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 C). Tomorrow the weather report is calling for similar conditions, with a high of about 75, or 24 degrees C.

5th July World Champion meets Tri Bear

World Ironman Champion Chrissie Wellington took time out of her schedule to pose with Tri Bear and some of the Tri Preston posse at the Pasta Party last night. Watch parts 1 and 2 of her acceptance speech and the Womens Finish from Hawaii Ironman Kona 2007. Photos to follow on return.

3rd July IM DE

Wetsuits are allowed at Ironman Germany up to a water temperature of 24.0°C. The Ironman Germany website is currently showing a water temperature at the Langener Waldsee of 24.1°C. Apparently the organisers are desperate to avoid a non-wetsuit swim but are committed to announcing the decision today at the race briefing. Could be interesting......

2nd July Splash and Dash Too

Phil Davidson and Neil Smith took part in the second of the Wednesday evening 'Splash and Dash' Summer Aquathlons from the Rock and River Outdoor Centre in Mawdesley. The race, which consists of a 500m open water swim followed by a 5k trail run, was won by recently crowned NW Aquathlon champion Sam Russell. Race 3 in the series is 30th July.

29th June Dave in the Willows

Dave Tierney wasn't able to repeat his age group win from last year but still finished an excellent 12th Overall, 4th in his age category, at the Newton-le-Willows Triathlon. Dave's overall time of 1:20:10 was an improvement of 1 minute 58 seconds on last year.

26th June Rodger puts junior in his place

Rodger Wilkins gained some revenge for his defeat at the Rossendale Triathlon with victory in the second of the Thursday Evening Aquathlons on 26th June. Just goes to show you can't rest on your laurels in Triathlon as Rossendale victor Dan McParland was pushed into 2nd place.

22nd June L'Ironman France

Congrats to both Adam Bolton and Miles Peacock for both completing Ironman France in Nice on 22nd June. One of the most difficult bike courses around with over 5,000ft of climbing and Adam even beat a couple of the Pros into the bargain. Well Done Chaps.

15th June Seconds for Rodger and Tabs

Rodger Wilkins and Simon Hocking both competed in the inaugural North West Aquathlon Championships at Salford Watersports centre on June 15th. 7th after the swim, a 17:04 5k saw Rodger move up to 2nd Overall. Same day, different location, Andrew Tabernacle finished a superb 45th Overall at the Windsor Triathlon. Tabs' splits of 25:38, 1:07:01 and 43:55 for a total 2:16:35 saw him miss out on an age category win by a mere 8 seconds.

8th June Tri Preston Men take honours at Llyn Tegid

Tri Preston's Male team of Duncan Anderson, Richard Holmes, Andrew McCracken, Martyn Cooper, Jim Townhill and Mark Procter took the team prize at the Bala Middle Distance Triathlon with a total time of 29:43:10 ahead of Manchester Tri 30:02:14 and Chester Tri 30:40:32. This victory followed both Male and Female team victories at the St Annes Triathlon.

8th June Tatton Park gets Matt finish

The first ever Tatton Park Triathlon held on Sunday 8th June produced a top half finish for Tri Preston's Matt Gallagher in the Sprint distance. Matt's time of 1:24:17 with splits of 14:31, 39:23 and 30:21 for the 500m Swim, 20k Bike and 5k Run placed him an excellent 140th of 310 finishers.

8th June Rossendale Triathlon

Well Done Rodger and Simon, 2nd and 34th respectively.

7th June Vancouver World Championships

Peter Knott took Silver in the Sprint distance Age Group 70-74 whilst Nicola King was 3rd Brit, 12th Overall in the Olympic distance 35-39 Age Group.

31st May Cheshire Triathlon/Garburn Trail Race

Graham Beck was the lone Tri Preston representative at the ever popular Cheshire Triathlon on Sunday, finishing 5th in his age category, 62nd Overall in an excellent time of 1:11:16. At the same time Simon Devereux (78th of 437 starters in 2:08:04) and Phil Davidson (222nd in 2:27:38) were completing the Garburn Trail Race in Staveley; 24k and nearly 2000 feet of climbing in one of the most memorable events in the walking and running calendar.

23rd May St Annes Triathlon Update

It looked as though Helen had claimed second place at the St Annes Triathlon however according to postings on Tri Talk it would seem that the "winner" was an imposter. The posting on the Tri Talk Forum (http://www.tritalk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=42490&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60 ) would suggest that Stephen McNamara from NYP took his (female) friends entry and stole Helen Murphy's glory in the Female category. We wait to see if there are any developments

18th May St Annes Triathlon

Helen Murphy claimed second in the ladies race with Andrea Caunce in seventh and Cheryl Hinde also came second in the vets. Also racing was Zoe Sharp and Sarah Patterson. In the mens race Duncan Anderson came sixth with Jim Townhill, Stephen Hinde, Hugh Roberts, Phil Davidson, Ian Murphy and Richard Teh representing the club in a big turnout. A special mention to the eternal youth Peter Knott who claimed second place in the super vet category at the spritely age of 72. Tri Preston also claimed first place in both the mens and ladies team competition, and a mens third. Full results can be found here

17th May Keswick Mountain Festival Triathlon

Tri Preston were well represented at this one with six turnouts. Highest placed was Aly Woodall who came fouth in her category with Vicki Cummings also competing in the ladies race. Martyn Cooper was fifth in the vets category, Richard Holmes ninth in the mens race with Mark Proctor and Chris Hughes also representing the club.
