6th/7th June, Weekend roundup

Any of you present at the recent Keswick Mountain Festival Triathlon would have noticed Alwyn and Colin Hayes training hard for the the Low Alpine Mountain Marathon (LAMM), a two day mountain orienteering event for pairs with an overnight camp. The LAMM was a 3.5 to 4 hour drive North of Glasgow this year, located at Kintail in the Scottish Highlands.
Alwyn & Colin completed course D which covered 21k (1,230m of ascent) on the Saturday and 16k (850m) on the Sunday, in a time of 08:13:25.
Closer to home Paul Sanderson followed up his superb result at Keswick with a 3rd place (02:22:15) at the Coniston Standard Distance Triathlon on Saturday, some 5 minutes behind Tri Clan's (and former Tri Preston) Rodger Wilkins. John Hampson continued his good form with a 14th place (02:25:40) and Darren Slater, training hard for Ironman UK, completed a trio of Tri Preston athletes in 62nd place (03:04:42).
Shirley Hunt completed her first Garburn Trail, reduced from 24k to 17k because of severe weather, in 01:47:18 on Saturday whilst Hugh Roberts finished a very respectable 30th place (01:05:06) at the Northwich Triathlon on Sunday.
Peter Knott travelled South for the National Sprint Triathlon Championships (750m swim/20km bike/5km run) at Emberton Country Park and led of the bike in the M70-74 age category before finally placing 3rd in 1hr 40.23. 16 March, Taster sessions

Ribble Valley Cycling Club are running a series of beginners cycling sessions from Preston Sports Arena, commencing Wednesday 22 April through to 27 May at 6pm. The taster sessions are aimed at beginners to try and build confidence.

15 March, NW Duathlon Champ

Adam Bolton kicked of his MV50 (and Marc Laithwaite) years in fine style by winning his Age Group at the Parbold NW BTF Duathlon Championships in a time of 1:34:32.20; there were fine performances also from Andrew Knowles (1:38:01.15) on the back of the Winter Duathlon Series and from Paul Craig in his first Duathlon (1:45:14.45). The introduction of chip timing paid dividends for Marc and his team this year with less than a second separating the first two.
Congratulations also to Cheryl and Steve Hinde who recorded 1:28:21 and 1:08:52 respectively at the St Annes 10.

12 March, Plug pulled on Rivington Triathlon

United Utilities has pulled the plug on Rivington Triathlon because it does not want people swimming in Rivington Reservoir. The company says Rivington Triathlon competitors will send out the wrong message and encourage youngsters to risk their lives in its waterways. But despite the safety fears, United Utilities is allowing Ironman UK, which is coming to Bolton for the first time, to take place at the reservoir. Reaction from the Chorley Citizen, Manchester Evening News and Tri Talk Forum.

19 Feb, Rock and Ice Diamond

From the 21st to the 27th March Chris Hughes will be competing in the Rock & Ice Diamond Ultra Race, a 6 day 225km self-sufficiency marathon run from Yellowknife in the Canadian North West Territories. All competitors must tow a sled or pulk containing all kit required with the exception of water and tents which are provided by the organisers. You can follow Chris' preparation, training and progress during the race via his blogspot or better still sponsor him at Justgiving. All proceeds go to Macmillan Cancer Support. If you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. It's basically a marathon a day in racing snow shoes where temperatures can dip below -40 so if you can in these times please give generously for this very worthy charity!

15 Feb, Ski Miles

Miles Peacock took part in the ITU Winter Triathlon World Age Group Championships from Gaishorn am See in Austria on Sunday, competing against his global counterparts in a tough 4.5k off-road Run, 7.5k off-road Bike and 6.2k cross country Ski over the snowy mountainous terrain. Form an orderly queue please.

2 Feb, Cumbrian (Not Quite) Christmas Cracker

Fred or Bust star Scarab tried his hand at the (not quite Christmas) Cracker. With 20 of the clubs Triathletes competing at the Pennine Bridleway Relay on the same day, Steve Hinde was the only TP representative this time around in an event re-scheduled from December due to the severe weather.

1 Feb, 2:34 at Waterfoot

What's 2 minutes 34 seconds between friends? Well, quite a lot when it comes to the Pennine Bridleway Relay results. In short, the PBR is a relay race in a clockwise direction around the Mary Towneley Loop consisting of the following 5 legs run in pairs i.e. ten different runners:
Leg 1 - Fearns School to the Long Causeway. 8.5 miles, 1361ft of climb.
Leg 2 - Long Causeway to Callis Bridge. 12.5 miles, 1560ft of climb.
Leg 3 - Callis Bridge to Calderbrook Road. 9.0 miles, 1570ft of climb.
Leg 4 - Calderbrook Road to Whitworth. 5.5 miles, 735ft of climb.
Leg 5 - Whitworth to Waterfoot ( Fearns School). 10.5 miles, 1390ft of climb.
After 3 of the 5 legs, Tri Preston B held a healthy 28:26 lead over Tri Preston A. This was reduced to 11:45 by the end of leg 4 and overhauled in the final leg to leave a mere 2 minutes 34 seconds separating the two teams at the finish despite nearly 7¾ hours of running. A big thank-you to all who took part and judging from the responses it appears that many would like to enter the event again next year.
For photos of the event visit Sleepmonsters. Bragging rights until Sunday 31st January 2010.......

21 Jan, Salford is No, Liverpool is Go

Some of Liverpool's most famous locations will provide the backdrop for the city's first triathlon since 2004. The closed-road race represents something of a coup for its organisers, Mass Participation Events. Sadly, following hot on the heels of the announcement came the news that the 2009 Salford World Cup is to be postponed.
Taking place on 21 June, the Liverpool Triathlon will include a 1500m swim in the Albert Dock and a 40k bike along Wapping, The Strand and Great Howard Street. The 10k run through Salthouse Dock, Wapping, The Strand, around the Liver Building and returning along the waterside, will finish in the piazza next to the ECHO arena.
In addition to the Olympic distance races there will be a sprint, super sprint and relay challenge. Organisers are targetting 1,000 entries for the race that will see Liverpool join London as a major UK city to host triathlon this season.

18 Jan, January Newsletter

The Jan 09 Newsletter, very kindly compiled by Vicki Cummings, is now available to download. It's a pretty large file (4mB) which is why it hasn't been mailed out to individuals.
